Each April is designated as Environmental Awareness Month with Earth Day as its central focus. The CHS library will host two events from April 3-27, 2012 as a reminder of the importance of bettering the world around us. Library visitors may throw away any aluminum cans or bottled drinks at labeled trash bins. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used for the purchase of library books. Students who submit drawings or poems on ways to improve the environment may enter a drawing for a Barnes & Noble gift certificate. For ideas, take a look at the online site titled "50 ways to help the planet" http://www.50waystohelp.com/ I hope many from the CHS community participate in these activities.

CHS students actively participated in the library Teen Read Week festivities. From a list of ALA Top Teen Picks 2011, California Young Reader YA nominated books, and Printz medal winners, they selected I am number four by Pittacus Lore at the CHS Book of the Year. They chose Claudia Bautista's Animoto video of the Hunger games as their favorite during the CHS Teen Read Week Art & Multimedia contest. These clippings will be featured here. Look for samples from all the student participants at the Books section. First, visitors may vote on the best ALA Teen Read of the Year from the top ten choices selected in September. Mr. Calderon and I will each purchase the winning book to add to the library collection. Students may also participate in Teen Read Week book contest in either the art or multimedia contest. English and/or Art teachers may reward extra credit for participants. The winners for each categorywill also receive either a favorite book or Barnes & Noble gift certificate. Information is included Word file below. I look forward to examining your literary choices. CHS students and faculty who visited the library during either lunch on September 23, 2011 were treated to musical performances by their fellow classmates in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Look back on the festivities with the Animoto video. For those who didn't participate, another open mike session will be scheduled the week of Halloween. Start preparing your material for this spooky occasion. Image from http://www.madisonvoices.com/hispanicheritage/images/Hispanic_300_opt.jpg Over the next few days, local author Jonathan Auxier will host book talks and signings to CJUSD students and staff. He will speak for the first four class periods and lunch at Colton Middle School on Wednesday September 21, 2011. For those who won't get to hear him at Colton Middle, he will appear again at the Colton High School Redlands Barnes & Noble bookstore at the Lugonia Shopping Center on Saturday September 24, 2011. Take a look at Jonathan's website http://www.thescop.com/ to learn more about Peter Nimble & his professional journey. After I read his Peter Nimble book & listen to Jonathan speak, I will post further thoughts on the "Books" blog from this site. In the meantime, enjoy the Peter Nimble You Tube trailer.
